The AFI visual essay by cinematographer Santiago Serrano, Reir Llorando is the story several immigrants face when they come into the U.S. Shot on 16mm film, this narrative focuses on a doctors who is no longer allowed to practice medicine because of a broken system and his family is in dire needs of funds. This unfortunate reality is all to similar to migrants as it usually means having to take any immediate job available. The beauty of this piece however shows this decision made by the immigrant. Though he is hundreds of miles away, his love for his family clearly shines through and is reciprocated by those that miss him.
This film is still in it’s festival run playing most notably at the New York Latino Film Festival.
